An air card is basically a wireless modem that gives you and your laptop access to the internet through your cell phone carrier. More than likely if you have a cell phone signal you can buy an air card for your laptop and thereby broadband access to the internet.
Most of the air cards for laptops that are available today are designed with the new 3G networks in mind, but are also backward compatible with 2G networks. Air cards are also pretty much carrier specific for the most part, the same way cell phones are, meaning that one carriers air card is not compatible with a different carrier. The good news is that there are also unlocked air cards for laptops out there and with these it doesn’t matter which provider you use. So both cell phones and air cards are available in both locked and unlocked versions.
