Air Cards For Laptops No Contract

Novatel MiFi Unlocked Air Cards For Laptops No ContractBy far the biggest question I hear from folks about wireless broadband is “How do I get air cards for laptops no contract?” I agree that the 2 year contract you will sign in order to get and air card for free is a long term commitment most of us would rather not make. Let’s face it though the cell providers are entitled to something for getting you in at zero down.

Let’s go a step further though and take a closer look at what you are getting for your 2 years of servitude. Now when you trundle off to buy a new cell phone, a 2 year  contract doesn’t like such a bad deal, after all some of these new phones are pushing $500.00 US. Wireless air cards on the other hand top out somewhere around $250.00 US. This means that you have sold 2 years of your freedom for the princely sum of $10.41 a month. Is there a better way? In my opinion yes!

In the world of air cards, much as it is with cell phones, there are unlocked versions of the carrier specific units that you would get from Verizon, Sprint or T-Mobile. What does unlocked mean? It simply means that the air card is not tied to any specific cell provider, in other words not locked to Sprint, Verizon or any other carrier. I can hear you now “So how does that help me?” Let me give you just one example.

Let’s say you want a top of the line air card, which in this example will be the Novatel MiFi. The MiFi provides wireless internet access for you and up to 5 other WiFi enabled devices. The first thing you are not going to do is run off to your local Verizon store and buy one, nope you’re first stop is the internet to find an unlocked version of the MiFi for about $229.00 US. Next you do some calling around to determine who has the best month to month data contract available. As of this writing that would be T-Mobile. Once that’s done you are going to take your new MiFi card to the provider you found and buy a chip (similar to the one that’s used in your cell phone) for about $15.00 and sign up for a month to month contract. You’re done!

There you are you did it, you’re no longer tied to a long term contract and if next month you find better deals at Verizon or Sprint simply buy a chip and a new month to month contract from them. Why would you want to go to this effort? Well for one the freedom you will get by not having a 2 year contract that can’t just cancel anytime you want without high cancellation costs, like when you find yourself in a financial pickle and need to cut expenses. Another reason has to do with the expanding 4G networks, which for the first time will enable the cell carriers to compete directly for your main home broadband connection. As carriers compete for this new market share the data contracts should become less expensive.

So there you have it a way to have air cards for laptops no contract. No it’s not free, but the flexibility it will give you can be invaluable in our present economy.
